Data about the association of bisphosphonate use and the development of atrial fibrillation have been conflicting. Now, investigators used Danish medical databases from 1995 through 2005 to identify 13,600 cases of atrial fibrillation and flutter (AFF) and 68,000 controls. Prescriptions for bisphosphonates within each cohort were documented.
Three quarters of cases and controls alike were older than 70; overall, 2% were former and 3% were current bisphosphonate users. No increased risk for AFF was seen in current or former bisphosphonate users (adjusted relative risk, 0.95; 95% confidence interval, 0.84–1.07 and ARR, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.90–1.21, respectively).
