Most women avoid alcohol during pregnancy, but some might engage in risky behaviors before realizing that they are pregnant. The risks associated with alcohol consumption differ at various times during pregnancy. In a study using the Danish National Birth Cohort, researchers evaluated the association between binge drinking (consuming ≥5 alcoholic drinks on a single occasion) during early pregnancy and risk for fetal death. The investigators recruited participants at the first prenatal visit and conducted telephone interviews regarding alcohol use during the first 16 weeks of pregnancy.
