Acculturation is the adoption of behaviors from an immigrant’s new country. To examine the effect of acculturation on maternal health behaviors during pregnancy, investigators used data from 8588 mothers of singleton children who were included in the Millennium Cohort Study, a prospective study of children born in the U.K. since 2000. Interviewed twice (between September 2000 and January 2002, and between September 2003 and January 2005), these mothers provided information on their ethnicity, smoking and drinking behaviors during pregnancy, generational status, and length of residency in the U.K. Speaking English at home was a surrogate measure for acculturation.
