After childbirth, women often experience sexual symptoms, including dyspareunia, vaginal dryness, and decreased libido. As part of a prospective cohort study of postpartum urinary and fecal incontinence, researchers evaluated whether anal sphincter laceration during delivery contributed to postpartum sexual dysfunction. Participants were 546 primiparous women with singleton deliveries at ≥37 weeks who consented to be interviewed at 6 months postpartum about their sexual function. Results were analyzed for three cohorts: women who delivered vaginally and suffered third- or fourth-degree anal sphincter lacerations, those with vaginal deliveries but no sphincter lacerations, and those who underwent cesarean deliveries without labor.
