Endometriosis is a challenging dilemma for patients and practitioners alike. When medical therapy fails, patients often choose surgery for the promise of definitive pain relief — despite the uncertainty of success. In a retrospective study, investigators evaluated the need for reoperation after laparoscopic excision of endometriosis lesions (109 women) versus hysterectomy with or without ovarian preservation (47 and 50 women, respectively). All participants had histologically confirmed endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, and unsuccessful prior medical management; in telephone interviews, they provided information about reoperation, medical treatment, and satisfaction.
