Pertussis can be a substantial health problem for adults, as immunity wanes after childhood immunization or disease. Maintaining immunity in women who might become pregnant lowers transmission to infants, which is the group most vulnerable to severe pertussis and related deaths. Since 2005, two vaccines in which tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) are combined have been introduced (Boostrix, for adolescents [age range, 11–18 years]; and Adacel, for adolescents and adults [age range, 11–64]).
