The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey is an annual survey of a representative sample of the U.S. population. In the 2005–2006 survey, questions were added about symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, specifically urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, to assess the prevalence of these disorders.
Overall, almost one quarter of women reported symptoms of at least one pelvic floor disorder: 16% experienced urinary incontinence, 9% fecal incontinence, and 3% symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse. Likelihood of experiencing symptoms rose with age: One quarter of women who were 40–59, one third of women who were 60–79, and half of women who were 80 or older reported one or more symptoms.
