Fetal macrosomia (birth weight above the 90th percentile) is the most common complication of pregnancy in women with preexisting diabetes. In a study of antenatal diabetes management, 71 pregnant diabetic women (65% type 1 and 35% type 2) were randomized to standard blood glucose monitoring ≥7 times daily, with (intervention group) or without (control group) continuous subcutaneous glucose monitoring for 1-week intervals between 8 and 32 weeks’ gestation. The primary outcome was glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels (measured every 4 weeks); the secondary outcome was occurrence of fetal macrosomia.
