Sleep disruption is common among women during the menopausal transition. Such disruption could result directly from hormonal changes or could be a consequence of more frequent awakenings associated with nocturnal hot flashes. In the Study of Women Across the Nation (SWAN) — a longitudinal, community-based, cohort study of the menopausal transition — some sites participated in the SWAN Sleep Study, a cross-sectional assessment of sleep measures.
