The emergence of mood symptoms is a common adverse event among oral contraceptive (OC) users and accounts for as many as 20% of discontinuations. Nevertheless, some OC formulations can alleviate physical symptoms and mood complaints in patients with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Whether hormone use triggers onset of mood symptoms among predisposed women or whether it exacerbates preexisting undiagnosed conditions is unclear.
