Reproductive issues are a concern for nurses, given their work environment. Investigators for the Nurses’ Health Study II used questionnaires to assess occupational factors and risk for preterm delivery (PTD) in 6977 nurses who delivered live singleton infants. Data were obtained about work schedules (nights, hours worked per week); lifting ≥25 pounds; work-related standing or walking; and exposure to drugs, sterilizing agents, and radiation during the first trimester. Information was also collected about maternal age, race or ethnicity, height, weight, history of spontaneous abortions or PTD, parity, and medication usage.
