Critics and even supporters of nonprescription access to emergency contraception (EC) pills have expressed concern that EC’s ready availability might supersede use of highly effective contraceptive methods. In France, EC has been available without prescription since 1999, which has resulted in a 72% rise in its use. But has EC availability slowed use of highly effective contraceptives? A random sample of 1569 French women of reproductive age completed four annual surveys about use of EC pills and contraceptive methods.
