The importance of early detection of second cancers in women who have been previously treated for breast cancer has been uncertain. In a retrospective cohort study conducted at a breast center in Italy, investigators tracked all women with second cancers (defined as those occurring ≥6 months after first tumors were diagnosed) that were detected in the ipsilateral or contralateral breast from 1980 through 2005.
The cohort of histologically verified cases of first breast cancer consisted of 24,278 women. Second breast cancers were detected in 1044 women (median age at detection of second cancer, 60) and included 455 cases of ipsilateral in-breast relapse and 589 cases of contralateral breast cancer.
