Predicting the Onset of Menopause Remains Elusive

Hormonal patterns of perimenopausal anovulatory cycles did not follow an orderly progression.

Do menstrual patterns and vasomotor symptoms during the menopausal transition forecast the onset of menopause? As part of the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (JW Womens Health Jun 21 2007), investigators sought to answer this question by analyzing urinary hormonal patterns in anovulatory cycles among 159 perimenopausal women (mean age, 49). Participants collected samples for 1 cycle during each of 3 years. Previous study results showed that cycles exhibited three different patterns: (1) rising estrogen levels accompanied by a luteinizing hormone (LH) surge but no evidence of ovulation, (2) rising estrogen levels without an LH surge, or (3) absence of any rise in estrogen or LH levels.
