The American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) has published a new algorithm for management of women (age, ≥30) who have normal Pap smears (“cytology negative”) and are positive for high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types. The new schema reflects development of a diagnostic test marketed as Cervista HPV 16/18. This assay specifically detects HPV 16 and 18 and is the only such test that is available commercially. One of the FDA-approved indications for the Cervista HPV 16/18 test specifies its adjunctive use with the Cervista HPV HR test (which detects 14 high-risk HPV types) and cytology in women 30 or older.
