Hypertensive disorders affect 5% to 10% of all pregnancies in the U.S. In a large, cross-sectional study, based on hospital discharge data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, researchers assessed national trends in rates of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy and their associations with severe obstetric complications.
Overall prevalence of hypertensive disorders among delivery hospitalizations increased from 67.2 per 1000 deliveries in 1998 to 83.4 per 1000 deliveries in 2006.
