Sufficient levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D have been linked to fall prevention in older people as well as to increased muscle strength and bone mass; correlations between inadequate vitamin D and obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and some cancers have been proposed but have not been adequately investigated. Researchers examined the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and overall physical fitness in 242 healthy postmenopausal women (mean age, 54). Participants were a mean of 3.5 years postmenopausal and had mean BMI of 24.9 kg/m2. Most (92%) were white. All were asked to stop herbal therapies and dietary supplements before baseline testing.
