In any given year, 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness (defined as primary nighttime accommodation in a temporary shelter or a public or private place not designed for sleeping, such as a vehicle, street, or abandoned building). The fastest-growing homeless group is composed of women and families. Compared with women who are housed, those who are homeless have higher morbidity rates, mortality, and risk for experiencing violence — and have less access to health insurance, social support, financial resources, and preventive healthcare.
