Bacterial vaginosis (BV) affects almost one third of U.S. women during their lives; moreover, recurrence rates during the year after treatment are reported to be as high as 58%. In an analysis of private insurance claims data from 2004 through 2006, researchers sought to determine BV recurrence rates and risk for acquiring vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) in more than 32,000 women (mean age, 35) who filled prescriptions for single-dose clindamycin vaginal cream (2%), multiple-dose vaginal clindamycin, vaginal metronidazole, or oral metronidazole (the reference drug).
