Misoprostol did not affect ease of insertion or pain in women with previous successful LNG-IUS insertions.
As more women opt for insertion of a new levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) when their previous LNG-IUS is removed after 5 years of use, facilitating repeated insertions becomes more important. In an industry-supported trial, researchers evaluated whether cervical priming with the prostaglandin analogue misoprostol eased LNG-IUS removal and insertion in 204 European women (mean age, 38) who had experienced previous successful insertions. Participants were randomized to receive 400 μg misoprostol or placebo sublingually 3 hours before removal and reinsertion. Investigators rated the ease of the insertion procedure; participants reported pain as none, mild, moderate, or severe.
