Trichomoniasis is a common cause of vaginitis that has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes and excess risk for HIV acquisition. Men are usually asymptomatic and therefore are not tested or treated for trichomoniasis, contributing to high rates of recurrent infection among women. Investigators enrolled 484 women (mean age, 29; 95% black) with diagnoses of trichomoniasis who were treated with single-dose metronidazole at an Alabama public health clinic.
