Bisphosphonates are widely prescribed to prevent osteoporosis and might lower recurrence risk in women undergoing treatment for breast cancer (JW Womens Health Feb 11 2009). Now, in two observational studies, researchers assess risk for newly diagnosed breast cancer in bisphosphonate users.
In an aggregate analysis of participants in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) clinical trials and prospective cohort study (154,768 women; age range, 50–79 at baseline; mean follow-up, 7.8 years), investigators assessed incidence of breast cancer in 2816 and 151,952 women who did or did not, respectively, use bisphosphonates at baseline.
