One quarter of women will experience early pregnancy failure (EPF) during their lives. Although both office uterine evacuation and misoprostol are less invasive and less expensive than operating room uterine evacuation (which usually involves general anesthesia; JW Womens Health Apr 1 2010), the extent to which U.S. clinicians offer these options is unknown. Investigators surveyed U.S. obstetrician/gynecologists (OB-GYNs), certified nurse midwives (CNMs), and family physicians (FPs) who had treated women with EPF within the previous 6 months. Respondents (overall mean age, 49) included 309 OB-GYNs, 368 CNMs, and 299 FPs.
