In a previous analysis from the Women's Health Study (WHS), women who reported having migraine with aura had excess risk for ischemic stroke (Neurol 2005; 64:1020); however, no such association with hemorrhagic stroke was found after 9 years of follow-up. To determine whether this association might take more time to emerge, investigators analyzed WHS data after a mean follow-up of 13.6 years.
Of 27,680 women, 1435 self-reported experiencing migraines with aura during the year before study entry; of these, 85 had confirmed hemorrhagic strokes.
