Termination of pregnancy is a relatively common gynecologic procedure worldwide; however, access to second-trimester surgical termination can be limited (JW Womens Health Jun 4 2009). Reliable comparative data about patients' experiences with and perceptions of medical versus surgical termination are lacking. In a trial conducted at a single teaching hospital in the U.K., researchers randomized women to medical (52) or surgical (58) termination of pregnancies at 13 to 20 weeks' gestation. Standardized protocols were used, and all surgical terminations were performed by a single provider. To evaluate distress and acceptability associated with the two methods, questionnaires were administered 2 weeks postprocedure.
