Intrauterine contraception is reliable and safe, but postpartum women who want intrauterine devices (IUDs) often do not receive them and thus are at excess risk for unintended or mistimed pregnancies. Comprehensive data are available for postpartum placement of the Copper-T IUD, but not for the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS). To determine outcomes associated with planned placement of the LNG-IUS within 10 minutes of placental delivery (immediate insertion) versus placement at 6 to 8 weeks postpartum, researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial involving 163 women.
