Despite the positive emotional, psychological, and health benefits of breast-feeding for both mother and child, women with epilepsy who take antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are often advised not to breast-feed because of concerns that these medications might negatively affect the developing brain. The prospective, observational Neurodevelopmental Effects of Antiepileptic Drugs Study was designed to assess neurocognitive outcomes of in utero exposure to monotherapy with one of four AEDs (carbamazepine, lamotrigine, phenytoin, and valproic acid).
