Maternal injuries during pregnancy are common. To assess factors associated with injury during pregnancy, researchers analyzed data from 6609 mothers of liveborn infants without birth defects who took part in a U.S. population-based case-control study of birth defects. In interviews conducted between 6 weeks and 2 years postpartum, participants reported if they sustained injuries while pregnant.
Seven percent of participants (490) reported 527 injuries during pregnancy. Most injuries occurred during the second trimester (40%), followed by the third (33%) and first (26%) trimesters. Intentionally inflicted injuries accounted for 9% of injuries, were perpetrated mostly by intimate partners, and usually occurred during the first trimester. The …
