The long-held belief that maternal complications occur more commonly after intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD) than after other pregnancy outcomes might not be valid now that early diagnosis of IUFD is typical. Investigators conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess maternal outcomes associated with second-trimester dilation and evacuation or induction of labor for IUFD (121 pregnancies) in comparison with second-trimester induced abortion for any indication (121 pregnancies). Evaluated outcomes included maternal death, transfusion, infection requiring intravenous antibiotics, unplanned procedures, and thrombotic events.
