Incidence of abnormal placentation is on the rise, probably in conjunction with rising cesarean delivery rates (JW Womens Health Jan 21 2010). Placenta accreta is associated with excess risk for maternal morbidity and mortality, and limiting these risks is a growing public health concern. Investigators in Utah compared maternal outcomes in women with placenta accreta who delivered at 2 hospitals with multidisciplinary care (round-the-clock obstetric and anesthesia providers, immediately available gynecologic oncologists, well-stocked blood banks, and access to interventional radiology procedures) with those who delivered at 26 “standard care” hospitals during 13 years.
