Menopausal vasomotor symptoms are linked to declining serum estradiol levels, but possible associations between such symptoms and risk for breast cancer have not been studied. To address this question, investigators analyzed data from a Pacific Northwest population–based case-control study (988 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at ages 55–74 and 449 age-matched controls without breast cancer) in which participants' medical histories and self-reported menopausal symptoms (e.g., hot flashes, sweating, vaginal dryness) before breast cancer onset were assessed.
