Patterns of maternal morbidity are important to assess nationally to help guide healthcare policies and interventions. In a population-based retrospective cohort study of in-hospital singleton deliveries in Ireland from 2005 through 2008, researchers used discharge data from 19 public hospitals to investigate incidence of maternal morbidities associated with labor, delivery, and the puerperium. The analysis included 252,276 live births and 1489 stillbirths. Maternal morbidities were defined as moderate-to-severe conditions recorded during hospitalization that adversely affected physical or mental health. Morbidity rates were calculated both exclusive and inclusive of cesarean deliveries.
