Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) lowers risk for ovarian cancer, but whether or not to perform incidental BSO at the time of hysterectomy continues to be controversial (JW Gen Med May 10 2011). A simple assessment of future ovarian cancer risk could help guide decisions about BSO in women who require hysterectomies for management of benign disease. Investigators identified key risk factors for ovarian cancer using data from a case-control study conducted in New England from 1992 to 2008 involving 1098 women with ovarian cancer and 1363 women older than 40 who had not undergone hysterectomies and had no personal or family histories of ovarian cancer.
