Women who undergo uterine aspiration for spontaneous or elective abortions should receive effective contraception promptly. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are excellent options; however, tolerability, risk for expulsion, and compromised continuation rates are concerns. Researchers at four U.S. medical centers conducted a partially industry-supported noninferiority trial to assess expulsion rates in 575 women (age, ≥18) who were randomized to undergo immediate (within 15 minutes) or delayed (2–6 weeks later) IUD placement after first-trimester uterine aspiration.
