Although outcomes are better when gynecologic oncologists become involved early in the course of ovarian cancer, only a minority of cases are referred to these subspecialists for initial surgery. In an industry-sponsored study, investigators compared the performance of a multivariate biomarker assay with that of participating physicians' preoperative assessment of malignancy risk (based on family history, physical examination, imaging, and serum CA 125 level) in 524 women with pelvic masses. The multivariate assay included five biomarkers (CA 125, transferrin, transthyretin [prealbumin], apolipoprotein A-I, and β2 microglobulin); results were combined to generate an ovarian malignancy index score.
