The influence of oral contraceptives (OCs) on bone-mineral density (BMD) is not well understood. Data suggest a neutral effect in younger women and a positive effect in older reproductive-age women. Now, investigators have evaluated BMD and vertebral deformities in relation to histories of OC use in 491 women (mean age, 62; 88% postmenopausal) participating in an ongoing cohort study of older adults (age range, 50–80) in Tasmania. More than three quarters of the women had used OCs (of these, more than half had used OCs for ≥5 years). Analysis was adjusted for body-mass index, physical activity, alcohol consumption, menopausal status, and current use of hormone therapy.
