Since publication in 2002 of the Women's Health Initiative's initial findings, millions of women have discontinued hormone therapy (HT). In a longitudinal observational study, investigators identified 81,000 women (mean age at baseline, 69) from a California health maintenance organization who were HT users as of the first half of 2002 and followed them through 2008 for bone health.
From July 2002 through 2008, HT use fell from 85% to 18%, bisphosphonate use rose from 8% to 23%, and the age-standardized annual rate of hip fractures rose from 3.9 to 5.7 per 1000 women (P for trend <0.0001).
