Birth control pills remain the most commonly used form of reversible contraception among U.S. women, despite the difficulty of remembering to take daily medication. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants are much more effective than pills in typical use, but fewer than 6% of U.S. women currently use these long-acting reversible contraceptives. To assess women's perceptions of contraceptive effectiveness, investigators surveyed participants in the St Louis CHOICE project. Before receiving contraceptive counseling, participants were asked, “What percentage of women do you think would get pregnant in a year of using” each of several contraceptive methods.
