The use of continuous oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) to prevent scheduled bleeding has become more widely accepted as women embrace the concept of eliminating the monthly period. Although earlier studies have compared various doses of ethinyl estradiol (EE) and types of progestin, the effect of progestin dose on unscheduled bleeding patterns has not been studied. Sixty-six women (mean age, 28) who were already using cyclic hormonal contraception (pill, patch, or ring) were enrolled in a secondary analysis of two studies of continuous OCPs. Participants switched to continuous OCPs containing 20 µg EE plus either 100 µg levonorgestrel (LNG) or 90 µg LNG for 112 days and recorded the incidence of spotting or bleeding in daily diaries.
