Evidence shows that women's mental health is not adversely affected by legal, first-trimester termination of an unintended pregnancy. Some women might benefit from additional counseling about pregnancy options (and, if they opt for abortion, counseling after the procedure), but these women may be difficult to identify. In a study conducted at a privately owned clinic, investigators asked women seeking abortions how well they expected they would cope after the procedure. A total of 5109 women (age range, 10–49; 56% in their twenties) completed a counseling needs assessment as part of a preabortion evaluation. The study design did not include follow-up to test the accuracy of the predictions.
