The proportion of active-duty military personnel who are women rose from 2% in 1973 to 15% in 2011. Consequently, the proportion of female military veterans has also increased: 8% of the total veteran population now consists of women, and this percentage is projected to rise to 15% by 2036. About 75% of new female military recruits1 and >40% of all female veterans are of reproductive age.2 Women in the military have higher risk for adverse reproductive health outcomes, including unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and human papillomavirus (HPV)-related disease, than do nonmilitary women.
