We often advise patients with pain to take acetaminophen plus a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Combining the two is thought to provide better analgesia than either drug alone, although evidence from randomized trials is mixed. In July 2026, the U.S. FDA approved an over-the-counter combination of acetaminophen plus naproxen (brand name, Tylenol with Naproxen), so we’ll likely have patients asking about it.
Approval was based on several industry-supported studies, according to the manufacturer. To our knowledge, none has been published yet, but two were presented at the recent PAINWeek conference; only abstract data are available, so the findings should be interpreted cautiously.
