Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with adverse outcomes including elevated risk for myocardial infarction (MI) and death, but less is known about AKI's short-term effects when it occurs as a complication of MI. In this national registry study, 16% of 60,000 patients who were admitted with MI developed AKI, defined as a difference of ≥0.3 mg/dL between the admission serum creatinine value and the peak value during hospitalization. Patients with AKI were older and predominantly male.
