Guidelines recommend that adults with hypertension follow low-sodium and high-potassium diets to lower blood pressure (BP). In this study, researchers analyzed pooled data from 12 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (1999 to 2023) and determined how well U.S. adults with hypertension adhere to dietary recommendations for sodium and potassium intake. Researchers stratified each participant’s daily sodium and potassium intakes separately as ideal (sodium, ≤1500 mg; potassium, ≥4700 mg), recommended (sodium, ≤2300 mg; potassium, ≥3500 mg), or not adherent.
