In a recent multicenter study, researchers documented that combined intravenous and intraperitoneal chemotherapy is more effective than intravenous chemotherapy alone in women with optimally “debulked” advanced ovarian cancer (Journal Watch Jan 13 2006). In this single-center retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients with stage IIIC ovarian cancer, investigators asked whether surgical cytoreduction to less than 1 cm of residual disease affected survival.
All 194 patients (mean age, 64) underwent surgery and were scheduled for treatment with platinum-based intravenous chemotherapy. Surgical cytoreduction to <1 cm was achieved in 67.5% of patients. Mortality within 30 days of surgery was 1.5%, and the 5-year overall survival rate was …
