Two hyaluronic acid (HA) skin fillers are approved for use in Europe, Canada, and Australia, and efforts to get USFDA clearance are underway. Currently, skin testing prior to use is not required as it is for bovine collagen. In this study from England, 709 patients were treated with one of the HA products: Hylaform or Restylane. Patients were followed for one year, and those who developed skin reactions were offered skin testing. Three additional patients with skin reactions were referred by other physicians for evaluation.
Three of the 709 patients (0.42%) developed inflammatory skin reactions at some HA implantation sites. The reactions developed about 2 months after treatment and persisted for 2 to 5 months. Clinically, the reaction sites…
