On May 2, 2026, the World Health Organization was alerted to several cases of severe respiratory illness among passengers on the MV Hondius cruise ship. The illness was later confirmed to be hantavirus infection caused by the Andes virus (ANDV). The Andes Virus Outbreak Working Group has since published the first report of the outbreak, which includes data as of May 13, 2026.
Ten cases have been identified, with three deaths. All were passengers or crew members on the cruise ship.
The three patients who died had severe acute respiratory infection. One additional patient with shock and acute respiratory distress syndrome is in intensive care.
