Angina with nonobstructive coronary arteries (ANOCA) is increasingly recognized as an important cause of chest pain, particularly in women (see ). But does ANOCA increase adverse event rates? Using a Danish registry, researchers identified 21,000 patients with stable angina and without obstructive coronary artery disease on angiography and then compared their incidence of myocardial infarction (MI), ischemic stroke, and mortality against matched controls.
Although cardiac risk factors and chronic disease were more common at baseline in the ANOCA cohort, the 15-year cumulative incidence of MI was identical in the two cohorts (≈4%).
