Anticholinergic drugs such as tolterodine (Detrol) and oxybutynin (Ditropan and generics) are used to treat patients with overactive bladder. However, because some men with overactive bladder also have bladder outlet obstructions, concern exists that anticholinergic drug use occasionally might precipitate acute urinary retention (AUR). Researchers used data from a large U.K. primary care database to address this issue; nearly 2000 men with AUR were compared with 10,000 age-matched controls.
