Mounting evidence suggests that children and teenagers who take aspirin during respiratory infections or chickenpox are at increased risk of developing Reye's Syndrome, which is characterized by progressive central nervous system dysfunction, hepatic damage (typically without jaundice), and hypoglycemia. The Public Health Service Main Study of Reye's Syndrome and Medications previously reported a clear association of the syndrome with aspirin use. Using data from that study, these authors provide further evidence of a dose-response relation between the amount of aspirin taken and the risk of the illness.
